Privacy
This page says plainly what StudyBook keeps and where it goes. A fuller privacy policy and terms of use will follow.
Without an account
Everything you make — highlights, notes, quotes, lessons, web clips, settings — is kept in your browser on your own device, and nowhere else. StudyBook has no advertising and no tracking, and sets no cookies (see Cookies and storage).
With an account
Accounts are for people 18 or older: when you create one you confirm that you are, and the account keeps that confirmation and when it was given.
An account keeps a copy in StudyBook’s database (Supabase) so it can reach your other devices:
- your email address, and your password in a form that cannot be read back;
- your notes and highlights, quotes, lessons, web clips and settings;
- the photos you add to notes and lessons, as files in StudyBook’s private file storage (Supabase Storage). Only you can open them, except a photo in a lesson you share with a study group: that group’s members can see it, and a member who copies the lesson into their own planner keeps a copy;
- your study time, by day and device;
- for study groups, if you use them: the name and username you choose, your friends, your groups and their messages, and the highlights and notes you decide to share.
Nothing is sold, and nothing is used for advertising. Deleting your account in Settings removes it and what it holds, your photos included.
What leaves StudyBook
- Ask StudyBook and Mark with StudyBook. A question, and the passages found for it, are sent to Anthropic to write the answer; a request to mark words is sent to Anthropic to read what to mark. Your answers are kept in your own account, which only you can read, so they are on each of your devices; the server also counts the AI credits you use each month, to keep within your plan.
- Your plan. Your account records its plan (Free or Plus) and the month’s AI credits used. If you choose “Tell me when it’s ready” for Plus or a top-up, that choice is recorded with the time, so we can let you know.
- Web clips. When you bring in a page by its address, the address is recorded with the time, to keep within a daily limit. These records are deleted after 30 days. The site’s name (such as www.example.com: only the name, not the page or the rest of the address) is checked with Cloudflare’s family filter, so that adult and harmful sites can’t be clipped. A pasted clip, or one from the Clip button, has its address checked the same way, and that check is not recorded.
- Maps. Map pictures come from CARTO and OpenStreetMap (the Satellite view’s from Esri), and a place you type is looked up with OpenStreetMap’s search services (Photon and Nominatim), as in any web map.
- Pictures. The pictures on the timeline and on author pages are shown straight from Wikimedia Commons, so your browser asks Wikimedia for them, as with any picture on a web page. StudyBook doesn’t tell Wikimedia which page you were on.
- Notifications. If you turn on notifications for study groups, your device’s push address is kept with your account, and new messages reach you through your device maker’s push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla), encrypted so that only your device can read them. Turning notifications off, or signing out, removes the address.
Cookies and storage
StudyBook sets no cookies, and uses no analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind — so there is nothing to accept or refuse.
What it does keep is stored in your browser, on your device, only so StudyBook works:
- Your sign-in, so you stay signed in until you sign out (on this site too, if you sign in here).
- Your highlights, notes, quotes, lessons, web clips and settings, and where you were reading; and a copy of your photos, so they show offline and after you sign out.
- Downloaded books, so StudyBook opens and reads offline; Settings → Offline can remove them.
None of it is shared with anyone. Signing out removes your sign-in, removing downloads frees the books, and clearing this site’s data in your browser removes all of it from your device. A video you choose to play in a note comes from YouTube (in its privacy-enhanced mode) or Vimeo, under their own policies.
